07:09 pm - as an addition to "Everlasting Flame" Candles are marvelous, fascinating subjects. They have an inspiring nature, band a very admirable one. They are seemingly lifeless things until a sudden fire erupts from the wick, curling gracefull around that black piece of coalish twine, flashing and skittering about. Candles come in all shapes and sizes, in all colors and textures. But whats is so special about the firgure of the interwining Havdallah candle, that we choose it for this special ceremony? What is the reason for its mystyfying, interlacing quality? Well, first off it represents the interlacing of the weekdays, and the seperation of the Shabbat, but its ever-present connection to our life throughout the week. Second, it represents the intertwining of the needs of our lives, and how Shabbat is one of them. But mostly, it represents the importance of Bnei Israel, as a nation- to stay together. To hold on and never let go. To understand that we are still a people, however divided through our views on our religion, and that we must stand forward as one. The candle of the Havdallah is so- ut tells us of the bonding of our people- the wax weaves together in a symbol of our connection; the wicks seperate in the symbol of the rift of our different views; and yet, the smoke drifts ever upward, wafting through the air, coming from all the burning light, not only one alone. For even through our differences, we go together perfectly. In times of Jewish music, we belong, In times of spiritual longing, we bond. In times of great need, we are there for each other. We are embraced by our religion, but segregated through our different takes on Judaism. Yet we were, we are, and we always will be one nation- Toegther...and Apart.
